Solved Reasoning Questions where Blood Relations are given indirectly
One of the ways, in which blood relation questions are framed, is where relations are indirect and complicated and the reasoning questions are nothing but one lengthy statement. These reasoning questions are interesting and only seem to be complex, because with a few tricks and some precision you can easily solve such reasoning questions. It would be helpful if you revise some simpler reasoning questions that we have solved from blood relations before we move ahead.
Problem 1: Pointing to a girl, Arun said, “She is the only daughter of my grandfather’s son.” How is the girl related to Arun?
1) Daughter 2) Sister 3) Cousin 4) Data Inadequate 5) None of these
The first reaction on reading reasoning questions is going to be to leave them since they are too complicated! But hey, you don’t have to! With a little concentration and some basic understanding you can easily solve such reasoning questions. The next thought that comes to your mind on reading reasoning questions from blood relations is to draw a family tree. However, we are not going to let you do that too. We will solve the question by smart method.
We start with identifying the speaker of the sentence and who he is talking about.
In the above statement , he speaker is Arun and he is talking about the girl, therefore we can say-
Now we will cut short the statement into different parts and try and simplify it into one simple statement. Let’s start with the last part of the sentence, ‘Grandfather’s son’ – which can be your father or your uncle.
Now we know that the girl is the only daughter for Arun’s father or his uncle, this gives us two possibilities-
Since the statement does not give any further clarification we can’t conclude whether she is the sister or cousin.
Therefore the answer is Option 4- The given data is inadequate.
Problem 2: Pointing to a woman, Nirmal said, “She is the only daughter of my wife’s grandfather’s only child.” How is the woman related to Nirmal?
1) Wife 2) Sister-in-Law 3) Sister 4) Data Inadequate 5) None of these
Now, honestly such reasoning questions are a little more difficult in comparison to the question we have solved above, however let us start the same way by breaking up the statement in parts and solving the question the smart way.
Once again we start with identifying the speaker of the sentence and who he is talking about.
In the above statement the speaker is Nirmal and he is talking about the woman, therefore we can say-
Let’s go part by part of the statement and try and break it down and simplify the blood relations. We Know ‘She’ is the ‘woman’ and ‘my’ is ‘Nirmal’.
Moving on to the part where he says – ‘my wife’s grandfather’. Nirmal’s wife’s grandfather will be his grandfather-in-law-
The next part of the statement says- ‘grandfather’s only child’, this part refers to either of the parents of Nirmal’s wife, therefore they will be Nirmal’s in laws-
After having simplifies these relations, the statement becomes simple-
It becomes- ‘The woman is the only daughter of Nirmal’s parent-in-law.
This clearly implies that the woman in question here is Nirmal’s wife.
Therefore the answer is Option 1- Wife
Now such blood relation questions may appear difficult on reading, but the if you break them down and move step by step, not only will you save time but also reach the correct answer soon!
