Rashtriya Ekta Diwas: 31st October
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) was introduced by the Government of India and inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. The intent is to pay tribute to Patel, who was instrumental in keeping India united. It is to be celebrated on 31 October every year as an nnual commemoration of the birthday of the Iron Man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the founding leaders of Republic of India. National Unity Day celebrates the birthday of Patel because, during his term as Home Minister of India, he is credited for the integration of over 550 independent princely states into India from 1947-49 by Independence Act (1947). He is known as the “Bismarck[a] of India”. The celebration is complemented with the speech of Prime Minister of India followed by the “Run for Unity”.
PM unveils World’s tallest Statue of Unity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled the Statue of Unity, built on the midst of Narmada river in Gujarat as a tribute to freedom movement icon Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 143rd birth anniversary on 31st October. Built at a cost of Rs. 2,989 crore, the statue depicts Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel wearing a traditional dhoti and shawl, towering over the Narmada River. At 182-metre, the statue is touted as the world’s tallest – it is 177 feet higher than China’s Spring Temple Buddha, currently the world’s tallest statue. The statue has been designed by Padma Bhushan-winning sculptor Ram V Sutar and has been built by Larsen and Toubro and the state-run Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd. It took about 250 engineers and 3,400 labourers to construct the statue in 33 months.
Gadkari lays the foundation for India’s Largest Dry Dock at Cochin shipyard
Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation for the country’s largest Dry Dock at Cochin Shipyard in Kerala in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister said the Rs 1799 Cr project will help India garner a larger share in the global market with potential for larger specialized and technologically advanced vessels.
India conducts successful night trail of Agni-1 Ballistic Missile
A night trial of India’s indigenously developed nuclear-capable Agni-1 ballistic missile with a strike range of 700 km was successfully conducted from a test range off Odisha coast as part of a user trial by the Army, defence sources said. The launch of the surface-to-surface missile weighing 12 tonnes, the 15-meter-long Agni-I, which can carry payloads up to 1000 kg, has already been inducted into the Indian Army, they said.
24th India-Italy Technology Summit held in New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 30th October held talks with his Italian counterpart Giuseppe Conte and discussed a range of issues, including ways to boost cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment.
19th Meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) held in Delhi
The Financial Stability and Development Council, FSDC, held a meeting in New Delhi on 30th October which was presided over by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. RBI Governor Urjit Patel, financial sector regulators and top officials of the Finance Ministry attended the meeting. It reviewed the progress in setting up a Computer Emergency Response Team in the financial sector under a statutory framework.
New SBI ATM withdrawal limits to come into effect from October 31
New ATM cash withdrawal rules for SBI account holders will come into effect from October 31. The country’s largest bank will reduce the daily cash withdrawal limit for Classic and Maestro debit cards to Rs 20,000 per day, from Rs 40,000. SBI account holders having higher daily cash withdrawal requirements can apply for other debit card variants that have a higher daily withdrawal limit, the bank has said in a communication.
Malala Yousafzai to be honored by Harvard University ‘2018 Gleitsman Award’
Nobel Prize Winner Malala Yousafzai will be honored by Harvard University for her work promoting girls’ education. Harvard’s Kennedy School said Yousafzai will be conferred with the 2018 Gleitsman Award at a ceremony on 6th December. Yousafzai became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 when she was recognized for her global work supporting schooling for all children. As a teen in Pakistan, she survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban. She later founded the nonprofit Malala Fund to support her work.
Manipur emerge overall champions in first North East Olympic Games
Manipur secured a total of 159 medals including 80 Gold, 48 Silver and 31 Bronze medals at the Games followed by Assam which secured a total of 140 medals including 46 Gold, 53 Silver, and 41 Bronze medals. Arunachal Pradesh bagged the third spot securing 18 Gold, 20 Silver and 38 Bronze medals a total of 76 medals in the Games. Athletes from the eight northeastern states competed in 12 different disciplines at the five-day sporting event that began on October 24.
World Cities Day: 31 October
The United Nations General Assembly has designated the 31st of October as World Cities Day, by its resolution 68/239. The Day is expected to greatly promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.

World Thrift Day: 31st October
World Thrift Day is celebrated every year on 31st October worldwide to promote savings and financial security of individual and nation as a whole. World thrift day was established to inform people all around the world about the idea of saving their money in a bank rather than keeping it under their mattress or at home. The first International Thrift Congress which was held in Milan, Italy in 1924 had declared October 31 as the World Thrift day.

In India due to death of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the same day in 1984, World Thrift Day is being celebrated on 30th October. The aim of celebrating this day is to change our behavior towards the saving and constantly reminds us the importance of wealth.
Senior composer & lyricist Yashwant Dev passes away in Mumbai
Senior composer and lyricist Yashwant Dev passed away in Mumbai recently. He was 92. He had composed and written many popular Marathi songs. He was honored with many awards including Gan-samradni Lata Mangeshkar Award and Gadima puraskar. He had also served in the Music section of All India Radio, Mumbai.
