P S Golay was sworn in as Sikkim chief minister

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) president Prem Singh Tamang, popularly known as P S Golay, took oath as the chief minister of Sikkim. Golay, who is not a member of the state assembly at present as he did not contest the polls, was elected as the SKM Legislature Party leader. The Pawan Kumar Chamling government was ousted by the SKM after over 24 years.

 

In a major statistical system overhaul, govt plans to merge CSO, NSSO

To streamline and strengthen the statistical system, the government has decided to merge the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) and the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) to form a National Statistical Office (NSO).
Both the wings are currently part of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). While the NSSO comes out with various sample surveys such as on consumption expenditure, employment, and unemployment, the CSO releases various data such as GDP and IIP.

 

Isro’s new commercial arm NewSpace India officially inaugurated

NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), was officially inaugurated in Bengaluru. NSIL’s main objective is to scale up industry participation in Indian space programs. NSIL was inaugurated by Isro’s honorary adviser, Dr. K Kasturirangan in the presence of chairman Dr. K Sivan.
NSIL was incorporated on March 06, 2019, for commercially utilizing research and development activities carried out by ISRO in the area of space with an authorized share capital of Rs 100 crore and initially paid-up capital of Rs 10 crore.

 

Sahara – A Hostel for the Veer Naris

Hon’ble Lt Governor of Delhi Shri Anil Baijal inaugurated the Sahara Naval Hostel for the ‘Veer Naris’ at Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. Admiral Sunil Lanba, PVSM, AVSM, ADC, Chief of the Naval Staff and Mrs. Reena Lanba, President Naval Wives Welfare Association (NWWA) were also present in addition to several senior naval and civilian officials. The unique project steered by the Indian Navy for ‘Naval Veer Naris’ has been built in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnership with National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC).

SEBI panel suggests significant changes to FPI regulations

A SEBI-constituted panel has proposed significant changes to norms governing foreign portfolio investors, including simplified registration requirements for certain categories and barring entities that fail to furnish beneficial ownership details. After consultations with various stakeholders, the working group on SEBI (Foreign Portfolio Investors) Regulations, 2014, has submitted its report to the regulator.
The group, headed by former RBI deputy governor H R Khan, has also pitched for liberalized investment cap, review of prohibited sectors for foreign investment for FPIs, permitting FPIs for off-market transactions and review of restriction on sovereign wealth funds for investment in corporate debt securities.

 

Ind-Ra lowers FY 19 GDP estimate to 6.9 % with Q4 forecast at 6.3 %

India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) expects India’s GDP growth rate during 2018-19 to be 6.9 percent as against the advance estimate of 7 percent. It said the fourth quarter (January to March) GDP growth to decelerate to 6.3 percent from 6.6 percent in the third quarter (October to December 2018).

Justice DN Patel appointed next Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court

The Central Government has cleared the appointment of Justice DN Patel as the next Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. He will succeed the present Chief Justice Rajendra Menon, who will retire on June 6. He hails from Gujarat High Court and is presently at Jharkhand High Court on transfer.

 

Indian badminton chief Himanta elected to BAC vice-president

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Himanta Biswa Sarma has been elected as the vice-president of Badminton Asia Council. The 50-year-old got 35 votes from a total of 40 polled.

Patanjali Ayurved Limited’s Managing Director, Acharya Balkrishna received the ‘UNSDG 10 Most Influential People in Healthcare Award’ on behalf of Patanjali Group of Institutions in Geneva.
The five keynote speakers of the UNSDG (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) organization included Randy Oostra, UNICEF executive director Henrietta H Fore, WHO director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Abe Lee and Acharya Balkrishna.

 

Dylan Thomas Prize: Author Guy Gunaratne wins the award

Debut novelist Guy Gunaratne has won the £30,000 Swansea University International Dylan Thomas prize for In Our Mad and Furious City, an “urgent, timely and compelling” account of life on a London housing estate during city-wide riots.
The £30,000 prize was established in memory of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and goes to the best literary work in English by a writer aged 39 – the age of Thomas when he died – or under.

ISSF World Cup: Rahi Sarnobat, Saurabh Chaudhary Bag Gold Medals

Rahi Sarnobat added the third gold in India’s medals tally at the ISSF World Cup 2019 in Munich as she bagged the top podium spot in the 25-meter pistol event. By the virtue of the victory, Rahi Sarnobat has booked herself a quota in the Tokyo Olympics.
In the day earlier, Saurabh Chaudhary, the 17-year-old sensation, made the country proud once again as he bagged a gold in the 10 meter Air Pistol category. The teenager broke his own world record of 245 by shooting 246.3 points in the final to take the Summit standings.

 

Archery World Cup: Indian men’s compound team wins bronze

Indian men’s compound team of Abhishek Verma, Rajat Chauhan, and Aman Saini won the bronze after defeating Russia in the playoffs at Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Antalya, Turkey. India led by five points at the halfway stage and managed to hold on to the lead to defeat Russia 235-230. India scored 59, 58, 59, 59 in the four rounds.

 

China Defeats Japan to Win 2019 Sudirman Cup Final

Donald Trump becomes the first world leader to meet Japan’s new emperor

President Donald Trump got the red carpet treatment at Japan’s Imperial Palace where he made history, becoming the first world leader to meet with the new emperor of Japan. Emperor Naruhito ascended to the throne on May 1, opening what is called the era of “Reiwa,” or “beautiful harmony.” The president, who is on a four-day state visit to Japan, was treated to a welcome ceremony full of pomp and pageantry.

 

India bans Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh terror outfit

Kalpana Dash, Odisha’s First Woman Mountaineer Is Dead

Kalpana Dash, the first woman mountaineer from Odisha has passed away. Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik expressed deep grief on her death and said that she would inspire generations of young women in the state.
The 50- year-old woman died after scaling the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest. Kalpana Dash had complained of breathlessness when she was descending from the peak. She breathed her last near the balcony area while descending from the summit point.
